OWNER PHIL MATTHEWS must surely rank Wednesday as his favourite day of the week after a racing/football double header success on successive Wednesdays!

This Wednesday, Red Cossack won for him and his fellow Solario Racing (Banbury) owners at Kempton. It was lucky 13th run for Red Cossack who had hit the proverbial crossbar a few times before hitting the back of the net in decisive fashion under Willie Carson’s grandson, William Carson.

Last Wednesday, his 19-year-old son, Ross Matthews, played just his third competitive match for Raith Rovers when the Scottish Championship side took on the mighty Celtic in the Scottish Cup in their backyard and he took all the headlines!

“Raith youngster revels in Celtic Park limelight” was the headline in Fife Today.  Not phased by playing in front of 20,000 spectators, holding midfield player Ross certainly gave Celtic and Scotland’s Captain, Scott Brown a run for his money.

Phil and his fellow Edinburgh friends are Hearts Of Midlothian fans and indeed they named the Group One winning racehorse, Hearts Of Fire, who won a Group One in Italy, was third at Royal Ascot and was sold for 550,000 guineas.

Congratulations to Phil and indeed Ross on two memorable Wednesdays!
