Solario Racing (Tring) owner Gwen Thomas – a few pounds richer!

SOLARIO RACING hosted a hospitality day at Newbury yesterday in The Racegoers Restaurant and one of the Solario Racing (Tring) owners, Gwen Thomas, led her table rivals a merry dance as she won the traditional tipster competition by an eased down seven points!

It was the first day of the September Dubai Duty Free meeting and one which Solario Racing hosts each year for owners, guests and prospective owners.  As ever, there were some choicely bred, expensive and promising horses on show and the eight-race card threw up some nice horses to follow as well as a couple of 25/1 winners!

Happy Racegoers!

Happy Racegoers!

Champagne is never far away on Solario Racing hospitality days and yesterday was no exception as the bubbles flowed before a three-course lunch accompanied by fine French and Portuguese wines.  The Racegoers Restaurant was very busy but the food was as ever, excellent for pescatarians, vegetarians or full-blooded meat-eaters!

One of the highlights of hospitality at Newbury is the tipster service provided by former jumps jockey, Colin Brown, of Desert Orchid fame. He accompanied Solario Racing guests down to the paddock before the feature race of the day, the Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes, a Listed race over 7f which was won comfortably by Mankib under Jim Crowley.

As for the Solario Racing competition, the Racing Manager’s tips were accompanied by a heavily-laden disclaimer due to the change in going…which was just as well as it took him until the fourth race to give a winner and that was the short-priced 11/10 favourite of the nursery, Dirty Rascal!

Fortunately, Gwen, one of the Don’t Look Down owners in Solario Racing (Tring) ignored most of yours truly’s tips and she took the “Winner Take All” pot of £60!  (Don’t spend it all at once Gwen!)

The weather held out pretty well, our guests had a great afternoon’s racing and they generously contributed to The Hospice of St Francis (Berkhamsted).
