SOLARIO RACING struck yesterday afternoon at Tattersalls, purchasing a lovely, scopey chestnut colt by 2018 Derby winner, Masar for 25,000 guineas.
I looked at around 60 horses on Wednesday and yesterday and narrowed it down to a short list of horses to be vetted before going into the auction ring.
Earlier in the morning, I narrowly missed out on a lovely colt by Arc winner, Waldgeist, who surprisingly, given the sire, looked every inch a two-year-old. However, he went for too much money, so my next foray in the ring was for Lot 1534, the Masar colt out of a dual-winning Hurricane Run mare.
He really caught my eye, the first time I saw him. A horse with presence and scope, he’s a great walker and was one of 11 catalogued in Book 3 of the sale by Masar, who was joint 2nd top-rated European colt in 2018.
The dam, Diamond Run was a two-time winner at three and has produced three winners from five runners, two of which won at two. One of the siblings, Balladeer, trained by Michael Bell, was rated 79 and cost 30,000 guineas as a yearling. Fortunately, I did not have to go as high as 30k but I was in a battle with Mick Easterby (the man they say “owns half of Yorkshire!”) At 23k, it was against me but my final bid of 25k was enough to secure this very exciting prospect.
Known as “Mighty Max” by his breeders, the horse will be in training with Amy Murphy. The yearling went to Amy’s overspill yard at Newmarket where he’ll be broken in by Lemos and the team. I went to see him for a quick photo-session this morning as he was taking in his new surroundings.
The colt will be syndicated in quarter shares and on breeding should run over 7f to a mile. To arrange a private viewing, please contact the Racing Office on 01442 877 597 or email info@solarioracing.com.
