“NEVILLE” RAISED THREE TO NEW MARK OF 65

“NEVILLE“, aka Spring Romance was given an increase of 3lbs by the handicapper for his short-head win at Lingfield over six furlongs last Friday and now has a revised mark of 65.

Given that the runner-up, Royal Household, also went up 2lbs and that it was two and a quarter lengths back to the third horse, Naval Officer, the new mark for “Neville” seems fair.

A trainer perceives that the handicapper is trying to stop him or her winning while the handicapper perceives the trainer as trying to get an edge on the handicapper.  It’s a game of cat and mouse that has been played out for as long as there has been racing under rules, some 200 years.

“Neville” is a lightly raced 3yo and started off life as a 40s handicapper and ran off 46 at Wolverhampton in February when he won by three and three-quarter lengths.  Not surprisingly, he was punished by the handicapper for that facile win and went up 13lbs to a new mark of 58.  (In case you doubt the maths, the horse was officially 45 but ran a pound out of the handicap, so ran off 46).

A game second at the same course led to another 4lb rise but that did not stop the 3yo son of Zebedee resuming winning ways.

There is no doubt “Neville” is a progressive sort and it looks for all the world as if sprinting is going to be his game.  His pedigree after all includes two Royal Ascot Queen Mary winners over five furlongs.  What is surprising is that there are still two 1/12th shares left!
