SPRING ROMANCE stepped up in class yesterday when going back to the turf and was a very creditable fourth at Newmarket, beaten just two and a quarter lengths.

Previously competing in and winning four Class Five races, he was one of ten runners in a Class 4 six furlong handicap.  Drawn on the far side, ten of ten and with Jack Duern back on board, he tracked the leaders, made an effort about two out and then stayed on at the same pace.

The ground was officially Good to Firm but it was another baking hot day at Newmarket and there was a breeze on course which dried the course out even more.  Not surprisingly, Spring Romance wouldn’t really let himself down on the ground.  He is a good actioned horse who appreciates good, quick ground but this was too firm.

At Windsor when he won, the ground was very quick and we got away with it but this time the 3yo son of Zebedee decided the ground was too firm.  It was a good run given the conditions and Jack, realising his fate, gave him every chance but wasn’t too hard on him when he knew it wasn’t going to be his day.

The handicapper is unlikely to change his mark much if at all and there’s no doubt Spring Romance acquitted himself well back on turf.  He has had six runs this year and with four wins, a second and a fourth, has never been out of the prize money.

There are no shares available in Spring Romance but if you would like to get involved in a syndicate, Solario Racing has limited shares available in Don’t Look Down, a lovely, unraced 3yo grey gelding by Aussie Rules who is due to make his racecourse debut soon.  Please call the Racing Office on 01442 877 597 for a full colour brochure.
