Wootton Bassett x Nickels And Dimes
SOLARIO RACING was busy at Tattersalls Yearling Sales this week and struck late last night with a lovely, strong filly by Group One winner and Group One sire, Wootton Bassett for 18,000 Guineas.
I went up to Newmarket early on Wednesday and looked at over 90 yearlings which were going through the ring the following day. The quality of yearlings seems to get better each year, particularly in terms of how they’re prepared and given that the market was still buoyant at Books 1 and 2, it was never going to be easy to get the right yearling at the right price.
After doing my second looks and getting several vetted, it was into the ring on Thursday to do battle! It soon became apparent early on that the quality horses were going for good money and when a yearling I liked went for over £60,000 guineas, I knew it was going to be a long day!
There were several very well bred yearlings I was interested in which were going through the ring late on and one of them was a big, strong filly by Wootton Bassett out of a winning Teofilo mare, who’s produced one winner from two runners. The winning half-brother was a dual winner at two and was rated 93! I am delighted I secured her and for just 18,000 guineas which was well within budget!
Wootton Bassett was an unbeaten five-time winner at two and his victories culminated in an easy success in the Group One Grand Criterium over 7f at Longchamp. Retired to stud in 2012, he has sired the winners of over £5 million in prize money and they include multiple Group 1 winner, Almanzour. The pedigree is full of black type winners and two-year-old winners.
The filly vetted well, scoped well and lunged well. She’s a well put together filly who according to the vet had “no issues”.
What’s there not to like?
She’s arrived at Childwickbury Stud, where she’ll do her pre-training under the watchful eye of Stud Manager, Max Weston and his team.
