SPRING ROMANCE makes his 25th career start today but his first for new connections, owner N Hassan and trainer, Michael Appleby when he lines up for the 2.55 at Southwell but Solario Racing still has an association with the five-year-old sprinter.
One of his former Solario Racing owners, Des Young, has a great-niece who works in the racing industry. The 20-year-old Phoebe Andrews works for trainer, Mick Appleby and she looks after….yes, you’ve guessed it, Spring Romance!
There are over 14,000 horses in training in Britain, around 500 trainers and some 20,000 stables lads. What are the chances of that? Probably a lot greater than “Neville’s” odds today as he’s been heavily supported into 7/2.
As for Phoebe, she has been working at Mick Appleby’s for a year, since leaving Loughborough College where she took her A-levels alongside an AASE Programme (Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) in Rugby. A big rugby fan, she currently trains with Loughborough Lightning Premiership Team and the England Under-20s.
Working at Mick Appleby’s yard allows her to fit in all her gym sessions and rugby training as well as keeping up her passion for horses. As for Spring Romance, she said that the staff at Mick Appleby’s thought he was a filly when he arrived because he’s so pretty while she loves looking after him because he keeps such a tidy stable!
Today, Spring Romance lines up for a 13-runner 0-55 handicap over six furlongs. The question mark arises over the track. He’s never run at Southwell, which is somewhat of a Marmite course. Horses either take to the fibresand surface or they resent it. Having won on Good to Soft, he might well cope with the deep surface. But will he cope with any kickback?
It will be strange seeing Spring Romance racing in new colours but we wish him and and his new connections well. Maybe, Phoebe, who is going to Southwell today, will bring him some luck!
