ROMAN SENATE ran a cracker at Kempton last night to finish second to Sir Mark Prescott’s Neige D’Antan, the well backed 7/4 favourite.
Stepping up in trip to 1m2f for the first time was always likely to suit and the 16/1 shot travelled as well as he has done in any race to date. Martin Lane, who rode him when he was second three weeks ago at Wolverhampton, always had him in contention and the pair went second over two furlongs out and he finished thee-quarters of a length behind the winner and a short head in front of the third horse, Princess Willow. The trio pulled well clear of the remainder.
As this was a Classified Stakes, Roman Senate was three pounds worse off with the winner than he would have been in a handicap, so this was another good run from the son of Holy Roman Emperor.
Needless to say, the owners were delighted with another good run and on last night’s evidence, his turn in the number one spot should not be too far away.
