ROMAN LEGION needs to find substantial improvement on his second run a month ago if he is to overcome hot favourite Sea Fox in the 6f maiden auction stakes at Lingfield tomorrow (2.30pm).
Unfortunately, due to the very quick ground and hanging to the left, Solario Racing’s 2yo did not go through with his effort when he came to win his race last time out at Brighton. In addition, the form of his first race has not worked out although his second race is shaping up better with the first and third having been subsequently placed while the second Bayston Hill won today at Wolverhampton after three previous seconds.
However, Sea Fox from the David Evans yard has had two very creditable seconds from two starts and the form of his first race at Newbury looks half decent. He has been significantly backed and could go off odds-on.
Quick Thought, second on his debut at 33/1, beaten just half a length looks a big threat as does, What A Boy, who was a well-backed favourite on his debut. He finished fifth but the first and third have both won subsequently, so the form looks good. Roman Legion is an each-way price at 12/1 but realistically, he has three principal dangers. Dean reports the horse is very well which is why he is keen to run him.
Dean has three other runners tomorrow, including Cappananty Con in the 5f nursery at LIngfield in the first, due off at 2pm.
He seems to be improving quickly and the second top-weight is as low as 9/4 favourite to oblige. It would be a fitting tribute if he did for Carolyn Whitaker who had a quarter share in this lovely son of Zebedee.
At Bath, there are two Harper Lodge Farm runners with Jack The Laird in a competitive 5f handicap (6.30pm) and Catherina, stepping up in trip for a 1m5f handicap (9pm). The former looks more solid at 5/1 but if she settles, the longer trip could suit this 14/1 shot. (Bear in mind she won two races ago at 20/1 when tackling a longer trip).
Robert Winston rides all four runners for Dean. Good luck to all connections!
