DEAN sent out 13 runners last week and the nearest the yard came to a winner was Twin Sails, who was agonisingly touched off in an Apprentice race at York.
A dual winner last year, he had some good juvenile form, finishing fourth in the Group Two Vintage Stakes behind subsequent 2000 Guineas Winner, Galileo Gold and finishing 7 3/4 lengths behind last year’s leading 2yo, Air Force Blue in the Dewhurst. He had failed to find his form this year to date but had dropped to an attractive mark and with first time blinkers, he had a good chance of going close. He ran a great race and just failed to finish first past the post under Jack Duern.
In a relatively quiet week for the yard, the in-form Jack The Laird put up another creditable performance when second at Salisbury under Robert Winston. The other two performances to note were Caspian Prince’s fifth in a Listed race at York on Saturday and Roman Legion’s fifth at Lingfield when he was doing his best work at the finish.
Newmarket’s July Meeting saw some top quality racing and at last we had some proper quick summer racing ground which led to some high class performances by good horses. Henry Candy’s Limato was a well-backed and convincing winner of the July Cup while Ballydoyle enjoyed success with Housesofparliament in the Group three Bahrain Trophy, Roly Poly in the Group Two Duchess Of Cambridge and Alice Springs in the Group One Falmouth Stakes.
