PAUL WEBBER, one of Solario Racing’s two trainers, may have endured plenty of sleepless nights last National Hunt season with on his own admission, far too many seconds but the Master of Cropredy Lawn has started off the new season fast out of the blocks!
Veteran 11yo Australia Day set the ball rolling, winning at Kempton on Bank Holiday Monday, his fourth win over fences and his 12th career victory. Not only did he pass £150,000 in prize money but according to the Racing Post, he “shattered (the) course record”.
Yesterday, Lemon’s Gent, owned by former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters, justified 2/1 favouritism with a win over the larger obstacles under Denis O’Regan. This was the Generous gelding’s third win in just 13 starts.
Last year, Paul Webber sent out 16 winners but almost twice as many seconds (31). With the season just over a week old, he has recorded two winners from nine runners at a strike rate of 22%.
Solario Racing has lightly-raced 3yo Red Cossack in training on the flat with Paul and when this exuberant but talented son of Rebellion learns to settle, he should give his Solario Racing (Banbury) owners a lot of fun this year.
