LUCYMAI, a seven-times winner for the Dean Ivory, gave birth at the week end to her first foal, a colt by leading sprinter, Due Diligence. Owned by “proud father”, Roger Beadle, who has had many horses in training at Harper Lodge Farm over the years, the bonny colt was born a little earlier than expected at Childwickbury Stud. However, mother and son are well according to Stud Manager, Max Weston.
Lucyami, who won on her debut at Kempton as a 2yo at 50/1 became almost a standing dish at Chelmsford over 7f, with five of her seven career victories coming over course and distance. The Multiplex mare raced 36 times in total and earned prize money in nearly two-thirds of all starts and attained an official handicap rating of 105 at her peak.
The sire, Due Diligence, trained by Aidan O’Brien for Coolmore owners, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier, was a winning juvenile in the United States before going on to be a high class sprinter at three in Europe. Indeed, he was Champion Sprinter in Ireland in 2014 his highlight being runner-up in the Group One Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot.
The stallion stands at Whitsbury Manor Stud near Fordingbridge in Hampshire for £6,0000 and in 2020, he was joint leading second crop sire of sprinters in Europe by Group horses. The foal would be one of Due Diligence’s first to be born this year and is part of the sire’s fifth crop.
Owner, Roger Beadle, is thrilled with the colt and reports that “Lucy” is due to visit another Whitsbury Manor stallion, Havana Grey, for her next covering in the coming weeks. Breeding requires plenty of patience and it will be at least 2023 before Roger’s pride and joy reaches the racecourse but hopefully he’ll inherit some of his Mum and Dad’s speed. If he does, he should give Roger plenty of fun on the racecourse!
