DON’T LOOK DOWN, the exciting grey Aussie Rules three-year-old gelding, is now fully syndicated.
Fourth on his debut at Wolverhampton last month over 1m 1 1/2 furlongs, he stepped up in trip to 1m 4f at the same course and was agonisingly beaten a nose and a nose into third place last Friday.
Syndicated in 1/12th shares, Don’t Look Down was purchased for 25,000 guineas out of Sir Mark Prescott’s yard at Tattersalls prestigious Horses in Training Sale last autumn. Owned and bred by the late Mr J L C Pearce, the full-brother to three-times winner, Tenging Norgay, was sold unraced as part of a consignment of horses owned by Mr Pearce’s estate.
Ordinarily, one might be wary of buying an unraced horse from Heath House as if it had ability, then Sir Mark would presumably wish to train it. However, given the particular circumstances, this was an opportunity not to be missed.
Sired by French 2000 Guineas winner, Aussie Rules out of a Rainbow Quest mare, Miss Katmandu, who had produced three winners from six runners, the 2yo colt was gelded in January of this year. Given plenty of time by Dean Ivory, this big, strapping grey made his debut at Dunstall Park on 17 July with Jack Duern in the saddle. He ran a race full of promise and was fourth, beaten just nine and three-quarter lengths.
Last week, although an outsider at 25/1, Don’t Look Down fulfilled the promise he had been showing at home since his debut and the 1/12th share syndicated grey gave his owners plenty to shout about as he fought out an epic three-way finish.
It is very early days for Don’t Look Down but judged on his first two runs, he looks to have a bright future.
