ARACHNOPHOBIA, aka “The Spider” ran a a cracker yesterday at Wolverhampton when fourth, beaten a length.
Twice a course winner, he has slipped down the weights since his last win which was at Dunstall Park back in March 2010. Now six years of age, he doesn’t have the greatest of joints and these days his main role is lead horse for the youngsters at Bowstridge Farm.
However, he’s been in good form at home and the trainer, in whose colours he runs, thought he’d run well although the six furlong trip was always a concern, as four of his five wins have been over 7f.
Unfortunately, the Spider missed the kick and was second last once they broke. However, one of the up and coming stars of the weighing room, Luke Morris gave him a fine ride and really galvanised the son of Redback. It was a messy race with three of the first six home, including The Spider hampered in the closing stages.
On this evidence, a return to 7f will surely see The Spider get his head back in front before long. In the meantime, after a couple of quiet days, he’ll be back doing what he loves…leading the youngsters at home!
