SOLARIO RACING was delighted to support the Marie Curie Autumn Lunch again this year and our two-part five-star champagne racing experience for two auction item raised £1,700 on Friday at London’s Park Lane Four Seasons Hotel.
For the first part, the successful bidder will enjoy a champagne tour of Dean Ivory’s Harper Lodge Farm Stables which will include seeing behind the scenes and watching horses work on the gallops, not to mention the odd canapé and glass of champagne!
The second part of this fabulous item comprises a day at Newbury races with Grandstand badges for two and a three-course lunch with champagne in The Racegoers’ Restaurant.
Bidding was brisk for the prize and several of the 300 guests contributed to the eventual price of £1,700. Auctioneer, Charlie Ross was as ever in splendid form and eked out every pound from bidders for the 13 items in the auction.
The after-dinner speaker was the legendary but ever youthful comedian and writer, Barry Cryer. Writer of gags and scripts for top performers including Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Morecambe and Wise, Jack Benny, Bruce Forsyth, Rory Bremner…the list is truly endless, he has appeared in countless TV and radio shows, including the perennial “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” since 1972.
Needless to say, Mr Cryer had the audience eating out of his hand as he moved effortlessly from anecdotes to one-liners. The 78-year-old’s after-dinner speech completed a memorable afternoon for Marie Curie and the assembled guests. While the final sums are still being totted up, the afternoon’s proceedings raised some £70,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Solario Racing was delighted to have contributed in a small way to this wonderful total for such a worthwhile charity.
