RED COSSACK made his eagerly awaited debut on Tuesday at Leicester over 7f and was beaten just six lengths.
Of the eight runners, the Paul Webber trained 2yo son of Rebellion was the only one never to have run before and one cannot over emphasise the importance of previous racecourse experience.
He took the preliminaries well, although was a little exuberant going down to post. When the gates opened, despite being a little slow to break, he was soon in contention. Although he did a little too much in the early stages, Red Cossack showed plenty of ability and was in contention for much of the race.
A furlong and a half out, the racecourse commentator said, “Towards the left, Red Cossack, running a huge race on debut.”
Having done too much in the early stages, the horse faded inside the distance but Jimmy Fortune was not overhard on his mount. The Racing Post observed: “Red Cossack ran well for a long way on this debut. He faded inside the last, but shaped as though he would improve considerably for the experience.”
“Rebel” will get the opportunity to prove the Racing Post right when he hits the track later this month.
