Robert Winston – two rides for the stable at Newcastle
DEAN doesn’t often have runners at Newcastle very often (three runners in the last five years) but today he sends Tropics and Lucymai to Gosforth Park.
The former is one of seven runners in the Betway Conditions Stakes (All-Weather Championships Fast-Track Qualifier) over 5f, due off at 5.45pm. The 11yo stable stalwart has run at Newcastle before when second of thirteen in November 2017 and he has won on the Tapeta surface when successful at Wolverhampton, also in 2017.
Tropics, the mount of Robert Winston, is third best off at the weights, so has to find improvement to beat the likes of Encore d’Or (rated five pounds higher) but he does look overpriced at 15/2 and has each-way claims.
Lucymai is one of eight runners half an hour earlier in the 7f handicap, due off at 5.15pm. While all of her winning has been at Kempton and Chelmsford, she has only had three runs on the Tapeta and was third of five on one occasion, last year at Wolverhampton.
While arguably she could be better on the Polytrack, 10/1 is a big each-way price. Robert Winston is again in the saddle.
