DAY TWO of York’s Ebor Meeting may have seen Seventh Heaven and Queen Kindly grab the headlines for major owners and trainers but Firmament’s victory in the Clipper Logistics Handicap was a major coup for racehorse syndication with a small group of locally-based owners winning the £53,000 first prize.

The eight-strong syndicate, the aptly named Gallop Racing, bought the son of Cape Cross at Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale last October for 25,000 guineas and the owners have not looked back since.

The horse left Jeremy Noseda rated 83 and made his debut for new trainer, David O’Meara, at Chelmsford last December when third.  Prior to yesterday’s big pay day, Firmament had won two races for new connections in six starts and he’s never been out of the prize money.

Sent off the 8/1 co-second favourite of three, the 96-rated gelding was well drawn in one and ridden by Daniel Studhope, he was always handy and taking it up inside the final furlong, he won by half a length from the fast-finishing favourite, Mustashry, much to the delight of Gallop Racing’s jubilant owners in the Winner’s Enclosure.  The syndicate’s Richard Walker said: “For a lad who owns handicap horses and will probably only ever own handicap horses, this is as good as it gets.”

So, yesterday’s win in an £85,000 handicap was a triumph for syndicates everywhere and proves owners can have success on the big stage for a relatively small outlay.

Solario Racing may not have horses in Yorkshire but it does run syndicates in Hertfordshire, trained by Dean Ivory.

Based at Harper Lodge Farm Radlett, Dean had a record season in 2015 for the third year running and he’s on target for yet another record-breaking year.
