YORK’S historic four-day Ebor Meeting kicks off tomorrow with the highlight being the Group One Juddmonte International which boasts twelve runners including the 6/4 favourite Postponed, seeking a six-timer.
The Roger Varian-trained 5yo son of Dubawi, winner of £3.8 million, is dropping back in trip to 10f and seeking his first win over the trip. He’s won eight of his sixteen career starts and his last five wins have all come over a mile and a half. Will he have the speed to repel the likes of Godolphins’ Hawksbill, who has won his last six including last time out in the Coral Eclipse? Ten furlongs is his trip, so it’s a fascinating contest, one which also includes the likes of Highland Reel and The Great Gatsby.
The Juddmonte is one of three Group Ones this week with the Yorkshire Oaks and Nunthorpe, the other highlights on Thursday and Friday. With nine Group races in total, there is high class racing all week, culminating in the Ebor Handicap on the Saturday.
Dean Ivory has three horses entered, all on the Friday. Twin Sails and Fighting Temeraire are both in the 3yo 0-100 mile handicap while Librisa Breeze, winner of the International at Ascot last time out, is looking to taste pattern success with a win in the Group Three City of York Stakes.
Harper Lodge Farm’s main jockey, Robert Winston, who is just two short of 50 winners for the year, has three booked rides on the opening day for three different trainers.
The fine weather looks sets to continue, so if you are going to York, soak up the sun and enjoy one of the best meetings of the year.
