CUNCO, the first born son of Frankel, his first runner and his first winner, bids to become his first Royal Ascot winner when lining up for the Chesham Stakes on the final day of the Royal Meeting.
Trained by John Gosden, who has already had two winners at this year’s Royal Ascot, he was an impressive winner on his debut over 6f at Newbury a month ago.
Despite walking around the paddock on five legs, being free going to post and taking a walk in the market, he was better in the race than in the preliminaries and won nicely by three-quarters of a length from Isomer, who reopposes tomorrow.
The extra furlong of the Chesham should suit and Rob Havlin, who rode him on his debut and who rode his first Royal Ascot winner this week aboard his guvnor’s Ardad in the Windsor Castle, is on board tomorrow.
Frankel has made an incredible start to his stallion career with four out of his first five runners winning. Among those winners are Frankus, trained by Mark Johnston and who won impressively on his debut at Catterick. He also runs in the Chesham and is third favourite at around 7/1.
Both Frankel’s progeny have the red hot favourite, Churchill, trained by Aidan O’Brien to beat but at 9/2, Cunco looks a very worthy second favourite and is a solid each-way threat to the favourite.
