ROMAN LEGION ran a very encouraging race on his debut in a 5f Novice at Brighton yesterday when fifth of six, beaten 5 1/4 lengths.
The son of Holy Roman Emperor handled the preliminaries impeccably but when the gates opened, he was slowly away, very green and was soon four lengths adrift. Robert Winston didn’t panic but the horse has plenty of speed and Robert used that to work him into the race.
Given his staying pedigree, not surprisingly, Roman Legion stayed on and he was eye-catching without ever threatening the winner.
Despite the small field, it looked a decent contest with the winner having won and been placed twice before while three others had all had two runs and been placed. The only other debutante, finished behind us.
Dean and the team have always thought a lot of Roman Legion at home but they have to do it on the track. Roman Legion proved he has an engine and the attitude, an always welcome combination.
We look forward to his next race.
Three of his five opponents had all run twice before and the odds-on favourite, Monks Stand had run three times previously.
