DEAN IVORY made the perfect start to the New Year when winning with his first runner of the year, Lancelot Du Lac, at Chelmsford yesterday.
The son of Shamardal was one of seven runners in the valuable £30,000 Conditions race run over 5f. Despite being drawn widest of all in stall seven, the 109-rated 6yo was always handy and after hitting the front a furlong out, he ran on strongly to win comfortably by a length and a half.
Although he had won seven races previously, including four times on the all-weather, this was his first victory at Chelmsford and his first success over 5f.
This was a qualifier for the all-weather championship finals at Lingfield in the spring and the improving Lancelot Du Lac would surely be a major contender should he turn up. In the meantime, the handicapper is almost certainly going to put him up a few pounds to a record high mark!
