Tropics -trying 5f for the first time

TROPICS has his first run today over the minimum distance of five furlongs at the age of nine at Newmarket tonight.

He is one of nine runners in a trappy Conditions event (7.10pm) at the July course, scene of the chestnut gelding’s dual runner-up spots in the July Cup in 2014 and 2015.  Off for the whole of last year, he has yet to show he is the force of old but at home he still shows ability.

Several of the field including Goldream, Ornate, Duke Of Firenze and Yalta are better off at the weights than Tropics compared with a handicap, so it will not be easy but the ground (Good, good to soft in places) should suit him whereas it is not ideal for some of some of these.

Robert Winston rides the 14/1 shot in an intriguing contest, in which Goldream, Duke Of Firenze and Willie The Conqueror look to be the main rivals to Tropics.
