DEAN saddles two tomorrow in the Shergar Cup Dash at Ascot, 9yo Tropics and 5yo Stake Acclaim and it is the younger horse who could have the edge.
Ten line up for the 5f contest, which opens the Shergar Cup meeting at 1.05 and the two Ivory runners, Tropics ridden by Emma Jayne-Wilson for The Girls and Stake Acclaim by Jamie Spencer for Great Britain and Ireland, come into the contest with very different profiles.
Tropics has been there and done it, including two seconds in Europe’s leading sprint, the Darley July Cup. However, he’s struggled this year, having had last season off through injury and he’s not getting any younger and importantly has never won over 5f.
Stake Acclaim, four years his junior has won four times, including twice over 5f and he was far from disgraced in the Stewards’ Cup last Saturday when tiring in the final furlong. Today’s drop back in distance should suit and at 7/1, he’s an attractive each-way proposition. Of course if Tropics were to find his form, his current price of 11/1 would look very large indeed!
Dangers to both include Green Door and Mirza but Stake Acclaim will hopefully not be far away and continue his progressive profile.
