NEZAR loves going to Wolves, particularly over 7f and last night he made it three wins over course and distance under first time jockey, Callum Shepherd, continuing the fine form of the yard in recent days.
The phrase “horses for courses” is a phrase for a reason and certainly Nezar always seems to perform better at Wolverhampton or Wolves as it is popularly known, than any other track. While the 9yo sprinter has won three times on turf earlier on his career, all five all-weather successes have been at the Midlands track.
Last night, Nezar had a lot in his favour which probably explained the late money for him as he was backed into 6/1 third co-favourite. Apart from being a thrice course and distance winner (7f), he was drawn well in six and was well handicapped, running off a mark 11lbs lower than for his last win early last year. The son of Mastercraftsman had been working nicely at home and he looked very well beforehand.
For jockey, 23-year-old Callum Shepherd, it was just his second ever ride for Dean and his only ride of the day. He always had the horse in a good position, behind the leaders and nothing was travelling better than Nezar going into the straight. Switched to the inside over a furlong out, he hit the front and won by three-parts of a length from fellow 6/1 shot, Van Dijk.
It was another very welcome winner for the yard and came hot on the back of Stake Acclaim’s success the previous day at Windsor. The yard’s change of fortunes started with Solario Racing’s Dancinginthewoods who won at Leicester a week last Saturday, so that makes it three wins from eight runs in the last fortnight, a very welcome and healthy 38% strike rate and a 67% strike rate in May!
