FOLLOWING the great start to the New Year with two winners in the first week, it was a series of frustrations for the yard last week.
The stats show that Dean sent out nine runners last week and the best places were fourths achieved by Tangramm (beaten a length) at Wolverhampton and Golden Amber at Kempton. Nicky Baby ran a good race at Dunstall Park at big odds to be sixth, beaten just two lengths.
However, that’s only half the story. Dean expected Varsovian to run well at Chelmsford on Thursday, only for the meeting to be called off minutes before the off, due to heavy snow on the track.
On Friday, nothing went right for Roman Legion at Lingfield, when he slipped coming out of the stalls, didn’t run his race and has come back with a nasty looking cut on his near hind.
Then to round it off, Eljaddaaf, much fancied to defy a penalty for his facile previous win, was lame before the start at Wolverhampton and so didn’t run!
Maybe a new week will bring new fortunes as Cappananty Con (by Zebedee) tries to defy top weight at Wolverhampton today in the 1.50, a six furlong handicap. Although he is giving weight to previous winners, he has a good record on the all-weather and should run well for Robert Winston, expecially back up to 6f. At 8/1, he has a sound each-way chance.
While I have no direct connections with the Paul Webber yard, I do think his Very Live should go close today at Plumpton (2pm) in a handicap chase. He is 5/2 favourite and Richie McLernon rides.
