SOLARIO RACING’S annual Owners’ Christmas Lunch has become one of the highlights of the calendar over the years and yesterday, owners in all syndicates gathered to celebrate another successful year.

Saute Grill and Meze Restaurant in St Albans is one of the finest Turkish restaurants in Hertfordshire and has become a favourite haunt for Solario Racing for the Christmas Lunch and Naming Days. As usual we had a private area and twenty-two gathered to wine, dine and make merry for over four hours!

Proceedings began at 12.30pm with a drinks reception and after a glass or two of fizz it was down to the “serious” business of the afternoon, the Solario Racing quiz!  Owners and guests soon pooled their grey matter into teams who were under strict instructions not to use phones!

It was great to see many new owners who have recently joined Solario Racing and they were soon making new friends among the more seasoned of owners.  The four course meal accompanied by plenty of Turkish wine was as ever fabulous and there was plenty of choice with some opting for traditional Turkey while others went more off piste.

The quiz generated plenty of debate and the odd frustration but there was the usual cross-section of questions on jockeys and trainers to racecourse anagrams and racehorse anatomy.  All five teams acquitted themselves well but it was “The Worst Haircut in the World” team, led by owner Des Young, which prevailed by two points to win the bottle of champagne.  After Des’ poor showing last year, he was determined to make amends and he lapped up his moment of glory this year!

Yours truly thanked Solario owners for their continued support and highlighted another good year with all runners having won in 2019.  He even entered into the spirit of election year with an impression of a certain British party leader, donning a blonde wig for authenticity!

The afternoon was rounded off with brandies and port and Owners made their way home after a thoroughly convivial and at times highly entertaining afternoon!
