DEAN IVORY, having been knocking at the door for the last few seasons, finally broke down the door and reached a record 40 winners in a year yesterday, courtesy of Bruyere, who broke her duck at Yarmouth.
The yard’s best ever total was 39 wins in 2013, in 2017, the stable achieved 38 wins and again last year, Harper Lodge Farm matched its 2013 tally with 39 wins on the board. This season, the winners have flowed regularly and it looked for some time as if the record would be broken and it has been with over two months of the year to go!
Bruyere, a 3yo filly by Exceed And Excel had also been knocking on the door with three seconds in her last three starts and she had also shown she could cope with soft ground although yesterday’s heavy conditions at Yarmouth left a slight question mark.
Martin Dwyer took full advantage of the filly’s low draw and kept her handy on the rail. Three furlongs from home, he took her to the front and despite challenges on her outside, she stayed on, never really looking like getting caught and the 5/1 second favourite won by a length from Carey Street.
Congratulations to Michael and Heather Yarrow and it is quite fitting that the yard’s biggest owners created a little history by providing Dean with his record 40th win of the year. The filly cost 145,000 guineas as a 2yo and this win will at least have started to put money on her future paddocks value. This was only her second attempt at 10 furlongs, so unexposed at the trip, there could be more to come.
Congratulations to Dean and the all the staff who have helped get Harper Lodge Farm to 40 wins in a year. The next milestone isn’t far away and that’s Dean’s 500th win since he took out a licence in 2002. He needs just seven more!
