DARK MAGIC won on just his second racecourse appearance yesterday in a 7f Newmarket maiden and was a welcome winner for Dean Ivory.
The 3yo son of Invincible Spirit had made a pleasing debut at Windsor last month over 6f and the extra furlong clearly helped.
Despite not getting a clear passage two out, the 9/4 second favourite made good headway a furlong from home and won comfortably by two lengths from the seemingly perennial bridesmaid, Buxted Dream, who has now been second on his last four outings, three of them at odds-on.
Dark Magic is another Dean Ivory horse who has a fabulous pedigree and was bought relatively cheaply (£14k in December 2016) having gone through the ring as a yearling for a princely sum, on this occasion, 575,000 guineas! Congratulations to owners Michael and Heather Yarrow, who look to have a well bred horse with a future.
Dean’s last winner was Eirene at the end of June, so Harper Lodge Farm is delighted to be back in the Winner’s Enclosure in number one spot. The horses have not been firing of late but maybe this is a turning point.
